2021 ACN Camp Nursing Symposium January 29-31, 2021

Non-members, your certificates are emailed to you. Slide decks from the presentors are available on the App as they are made available to us by the presentors.

 

This is the leading conference for nurses and others who practice healthcare in a camp setting. The symposium includes expert speakers, round table discussions, networking oportunities and more. The 2021 Symposium will be a virtual event. The speaker line up is robust, and we will be exploring camp health with a focus on how COVID-19 is impacting health services at camp.

Description:  This session will provide the tools and discussion to create a personal communicable disease plan for your camp.  During the session we will outline nonpharmacologic interventions, supplies and resources, managing an outbreak, and communication and debriefing

Camp: Trauma, Hope, and a Path to Healing

Speaker:  John Hamilton MA

Description:  Throughout the pandemic, the American public has sometimes had to choose between objective data and personal testimonials between science and beliefs. And while the medical, social, economic, and educational toll from the COVID-19 virus is unprecedented, some of the effects have been deemed traumatic. But how does this inform our work with youth? If we know trauma has lasting adverse effects on an individual’s functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being, what is ours to do? In this session, we’ll discuss how we can move from immobilization and dysregulation towards offering hope and wholistic healing in our work.


2:10-3:10pm (eastern) Camp Health Care Practices Within the Context of Covid-19: Benchmarks from the Summer of 2020 

Speaker:  Dr. Barry Garst

Description:  This session will address findings from ACN’s COVID-19 Camp Health Care Practices study and learn about the impact of nonpharmacologic interventions (NPIs) on health and wellness at camp. Results and implications will be shared to support camp health services for 2021

4:40-5:40pm (eastern) Preparing for a Different Health Services: Considerations for Care

Speaker:  Phil Hackmann RN

 In order to create a positive camp experience we need to mold expectations, safety guidelines, and support services to manage individuals in community-based setting during times of communicable disease.  This session will outline key activities needed prior to the start of camp such as pre-screening;  education of campers, families, and staff; health services adjustments, and much more.  Our hope is that this session will help you begin to consider the variables of importance as you plan for summer camp 2021.


6:00-7:00pm (eastern) Learning from Summer 2020 Experiences

Panel:  Judy Kirtley RN, Birdie Harvel RN, Andy Pritikin Camp Director, Andrea Yenter Camp Director

Description:  This session will be a discussion of the lived camp experience from summer 2020.   Participants will be able to ask the panel questions regarding day and residential camp achievements and challenges while providing camp services

3:00-4:00pm (eastern) Testing in a Time of COVID:  Considerations for Camp Practice

Speaker:  Dr Laura Blaisdell

As the landscape of COVID-19 testing continues to shape and shift, camps are beginning to think about testing strategies for Summer 2021.  This workshop will review current tests for COVID-19 and review their strengths and limitations.  Participants will also learn about current best practices for COVID-19 testing in the camp setting, and discuss the role camp nurses in testing administration and interpretation. 


4:15-5:15pm (eastern) Supporting Staff Mental Health: Five Overlooked Essentials

Speaker:  Dr. Chris Thurber

Description: The demands of camp leadership can stretch the most resilient staff to their limits, which is why camp nurses and other providers have a key role to play. This interactive workshop will use live scenarios and case studies to teach five overlooked approaches to staff mental health and wellness. Rather than wait until mental health problems grow severe enough to affect counselors’ functioning, you can teach, monitor, and assess social-emotional strength

Nursing Contact Hours 

Attendance at the Pre-Conference event and Full Symposium will award 9 nursing contact hours. The pre-conference event is 3 contact hours, the Full Smposium is 6 contact hours.

To obtain nursing contact hours for the Symposium:

  • When you log in to the Zoom sessions, please be sure the name showing on your Zoom screen is your name, so ACN can track attendance 
  • Attend sessions as described in the schedule
  • Completed evaluation in symposium app

Cancellation Policy:  There is no refund for cancellations. Most of the sessions will be available online for participants after the conference
